The Department of Communication offers a graduate program leading to the M.A. degree in communication studies. This graduate program is adapted to the student’s individual needs and academic background. Each student plans a program in consultation with an advisor from the graduate faculty of the department. With the approval of the advisor, the student may elect a maximum of 12 semester hours in allied studies in other departments. If approved by the student’s supervisory committee, a maximum of 6 hours of credit may be transferred from another institution for inclusion in the student’s program of study. A maximum of 9 hours earned at Northern Illinois University as a Student-at-Large may be approved for inclusion in a student’s program.

With the advisor’s consent, the student may choose to pursue the degree with or without a thesis. The number of credits transferred from another school or taken as a student-at-large to be approved as part of the student’s program of courses will be determined by the student’s departmental advisory committee.
