After completion of ARTD 273 and ARTD 275, students must successfully complete a portfolio review in order to be retained in the time arts area of study.

Photography (63)


Special requirements


A portfolio review is required for retention in the photography area of study after completing two courses in photography in the School of Art at NIU.

Special requirements


Students must successfully complete a review of their senior project during ARTD 406.

The student must successfully complete a portfolio review after ARTD 201 and have a minimum GPA of 3.00 in the following courses to continue in the visual communication program.

Total Hours for Emphasis 1, Design and Media Arts: 80-81


Emphasis 2. 2-D Studio


A portfolio review is required for retention in this emphasis after completion of designated courses in the chosen area of study.

Special requirement


The student must successfully complete a portfolio review in drawing after the following courses.

Special requirement


Successful completion of portfolio review after ARTS 327 to continue in the illustration area of study.

Special requirement


The student must successfully complete a portfolio review in painting after the following courses.

Printmaking (58)


Special requirement


Successful completion of a portfolio review in printmaking after two classes in the printmaking area to continue as a B.F.A. in this area of study.

Emphasis 3. 3-D Studio


A portfolio review is required for admission to or retention in this emphasis after completion of two courses in the chosen area of study.

Special requirement

The student must successfully complete a portfolio review in ceramics after the following courses.

16 semester hours in any combination of the following courses:

  • Credits: 4 or 8 A. Weaving
  •  ARTS 470 - Intermediate/Advanced Fiber Studio  Credits: 4 or 8  B. Surface Exploration of Fabric
  • ARTS 470 - Intermediate/Advanced Fiber Studio  Credits: 4 or 8  C. 3-D Forms in Fiber
  • ARTS 470 - Intermediate/Advanced Fiber Studio  Credits: 4 or 8  D. Papermaking
Special requirement

Portfolio review after any two 300 level fiber courses to continue in the fibers area of study.

Metalwork and Jewelry (62)


Special requirement:

Successful completion of a portfolio review in metalwork and jewelry after ARTS 351 and ARTS 352 to continue in this area of study.

Sculpture (62)


Special requirement

The student must successfully complete a sophomore portfolio review in sculpture after the following courses.
