Check departmental information for any additional requirements.

Option 1. General (22-23)

Six or more semester hours in the minor must be taken at NIU.

Option 2. Applied Mathematics (21-22)

Six or more semester hours in the minor must be taken at NIU.

Option 3. Secondary Mathematics Education (20-21)

The minor in Secondary Mathematics Education meets the mathematics requirements for an endorsement to teach mathematics in grades 9-12 in Illinois. Individuals seeking initial teaching licensure through Northern Illinois University in another discipline area need to complete these courses to receive an endorsement, on their initial Illinois professional educator license, to teach mathematics in grades 9-12. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requires that students must have passed all the MATH and STAT courses applicable to their minor in Mathematics Education with a grade of C or better. Students should contact the department for information about alternative ways of obtaining an endorsement which do not necessarily involve a minor.

In addition to completing the course work listed below, the candidate must pass the Mathematics Content Area Test (208) of the Illinois Licensure Testing Systems (ILTS) to obtain an endorsement in grades 9-12 Mathematics.

If MATH 410 is selected as the math methods course, then this minor course work will also meet the mathematics requirements for an endorsement to teach mathematics in grades 5-8 in Illinois. To add the middle grades endorsement the candidate must pass the ILTS Middle Grades (5-8) Mathematics Content Exam (202).

Six or more semester hours in the minor must be taken at NIU.
