To be eligible for a degree with honors, students must have at least a 3.50 GPA in their sociology courses and be recommended by faculty in the department.
The degree with honors will be awarded to majors who maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and a 3.50 GPA or above in sociology, and successfully complete at least 12 semester hours of sociology honors work (of which 6 hours must be SOCI 490, Senior Thesis).
Students who plan the senior departmental honors thesis in sociology should take at the honors level either SOCI 377A or SOCI 377B, Sociological Inquiry I or II, and a course in their field of sociology chosen in consultation with their adviser.

The University Honors Program is separate but complementary to the departmental degree with honors. Eligible students may participate in one or both programs simultaneously since there is some overlap in the requirements.
