Emphasis 1. Design


One of the following areas of study (54)


Special requirements


An art student may select the time arts area of study; however, official admission to this area of study is based on successful portfolio review, which may be formally requested at the design area office by a qualified student. Students are qualified for the time arts area of study after successful completion of the following courses.

Photography


  • Elective photographic studio courses (6)
  • Art studio electives with at least 9 hours from upper-division courses (18)
  • Art history elective (3)

Special requirements


A portfolio review is required for retention in the photography area of study after completing two courses in photography in the School of Art at NIU. A minimum GPA of 3.00 in all 300- and 400-level courses in this area of study is required for graduation. Prior to admission into ART 406 a student must confirm that the above minimum GPA has been met.

Special requirements


The student must successfully complete a portfolio review after ARTD 214 (including work of ARTD 213 and ARTD 214) and have a minimum GPA of 3.00 in the following courses for graduation. Prior to admission into ART 406, a student must confirm that the above minimum GPA requirement has been met.

Recommendation


Students are encouraged to select ANTH 220 and PSYC 102 toward fulfillment of the social science requirements in the general education program.

Special Requirements


Students must successfully complete a review of their senior project during ART 406.

  • Art electives chosen in consultation with faculty area adviser.

Emphasis 2. Fine Arts–2-D Studio


A portfolio review is required for retention in this emphasis after completion of designated courses in the chosen area of study.

Drawing


  • Art studio electives with at least 6 semester hours of upper-division course work (9)

Special requirement


The student must successfully complete a sophomore portfolio review in drawing after the following courses.

Special requirement


Portfolio review after ARTS 328 (including work of ARTS 327) to continue in the illustration area of study.

One of the following fields (18)


Oil/Acrylic Painting


Watercolor Painting


Special requirement


The student must successfully complete a sophomore portfolio review in painting after the following courses.

Special requirement


Successful completion of a portfolio review in printmaking after two classes in the printmaking area to continue as a B.F.A. in this area of study.

Emphasis 3. Fine Arts–3-D Studio


A portfolio review is required for admission to or retention in this emphasis after completion of two courses in the chosen area of study.

Course work in at least three of the following (24)

Portfolio review after any two 300 level fiber courses to continue in the fibers area of study.
