Minor in Kinesiology and Physical Education (22-23)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Education

The minor in Kinesiology and Physical Education is offered with two possible options: (1) a Physical Education option and (2) a Kinesiology option.

Under the Physical Education option, students take courses that align closely with teacher-licensure in physical education, or students seeking endorsement in physical education. The Kinesiology option allows for somewhat greater flexibility: students may select courses from a broader range within kinesiology, physical education, and related areas.

Across either option, the minor emphasizes both theory and application: students learn foundational concepts in human growth, motor development, assessment theory, and educational methods, and also engage in field experiences and practicum work in school, sport, fitness, and community settings as part of their coursework. In many cases, courses in the minor may count (in part) toward a major’s requirements or electives.

Because the department already offers a teacher-licensure pathway in Physical Education, this minor is especially useful for students in related majors who want to deepen their understanding of movement pedagogy, or for those considering careers in coaching, wellness instruction, or teaching contexts where an understanding of human movement and instructional design is valued.

Check departmental information for any additional requirements.

Option 1. Physical Education (21)

This option is designed for the licensed teacher who selects physical education as a second teaching field or students seeking endorsement in physical education.

Option 2. Kinesiology (25-26)

A non-licensure option designed for individualized programming. All university majors, with the exception of those pursuing the B.S. in Kinesiology degree, may declare the minor. Subject to departmental approval.
