Certificate of Undergraduate Study
Coordinator: Kristie Crane, Department of Sociology

The certificate offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complex interplay between environmental dynamics and societal disparities. Courses offered by the Sociology department (SOCI) delve into the socio-economic factors shaping environmental inequities, while classes from the department of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment (EAE) provide insights into the environmental and atmospheric dimensions of these issues. Through a combination of sociological and environmental sciences perspectives, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the environmental challenges faced by marginalized communities and develop strategies for lasting and just solutions. This certificate equips students with the knowledge and skills to address pressing environmental issues through a lens of social equity and inclusion.

The certificate program is open to all NIU undergraduates. Students must maintain good academic standing in the university, maintain a 2.00 grade point average in certificate courses and complete all certificate course work within six calendar years. All courses for the certificate must be completed at NIU. Certificate courses in sociology may be counted toward undergraduate degree requirements in that department. Certificate courses in Earth, Atmosphere and Environment may be counted toward undergraduate degree requirements in that department.
