HDFS 539 - Speech and Language Supporting Developmental Differences and Disorders in Infancy and Childhood


This interdisciplinary course explores the connection between language acquisition and cognitive, social, and emotional growth in infancy through childhood. Students examine neurotypical language acquisition, early speech and communication milestones, and developmental differences, such as genetic syndromes and neurodevelopmental disorders including autism and developmental language disorders. The course highlights the impact of family and culture and prepares students to support diverse communication needs through assessment, early identification, and family-centered intervention strategies.

Prerequisites & Notes
PRQ: At least 6 semester hours in human development and family sciences or consent of school.
